1. Research on learning style of students of College ofScience and College of Social Sciences and Humanities

Researcher: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Cong Khanh

The research examines the matters related to the students’ learning style such as the relations between the students’ learning styles and their learning achievements, which styles help students to easilyachieve schooling successes and the differences in learning styles among students majoring in different programs. Research was conducted on 448 students of 4 faculties (182 students of Faculties of Mathematics and Physics – College of Science, 266 students of Faculties of Literature and History – College of Social Sciencesand Humanities).

2. The relation between the using internet and the students’ learning activities

Researcher: Dr. Nguyen Quy Thanh with the participation of MA. Nguyen Van Anh, Nguyen Khanh Hoa, Nguyen An Ni

The researchers conducted a survey on 640 students from 10 higher education institutions including 5 institutions in Hanoi and 5 ones in Ho Chi Minh City.

The research led to the conclusion that internet is an effective tool for facilitating students’ learning process. Although it creates certain changes in students’ learning style, basically the influence of internet on learning style is not as strong as it is expected. Creating favourable conditions for students to access internet to facilitate their learning is necessary, but along with it one need to basically change teaching process. Otherwise, students may not be more active, may not need to get information from internet but they can get good results. This irrationality has to be overall resolved by faculty, students as well as educational managers.

3. Research on IQ of the VNU’s students (2004 -2005)

Researcher: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Cong Khanh

The objectives of the research are: Studying theoretical models of intelligence and factors influencing the development of intelligence; Evaluating IQ of the VNU’s students; Suggesting some solutions for enhancing quality of recruitment, training, cultivating and developing VNU’s intelligence potential.

4. Dual influence on the system of ranking indicators for research universities (2004-2005)

Researcher: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phuong Nga

The content of the research: Each university should assess itself and always compare with other universities on the basis of the system of ranking indicators. This gives the university itself and the community a more accurate and more detail glance at a training institution. This helps university to create strategy and development plan to meet the demand of the society.

5. Experimental applying procedures and sample of students’ assessment of subject training effectiveness in some classes at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (2002-2003)

Researcher: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phuong Nga

6. Developing item bank of English subject for students of non-English specialization at Vietnam National University,Hanoi (1999 – 2001)

Researcher: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phuong Nga

In the undergraduate curricula English is one of the subjects which has relatively large number of credits and has influence on the students’ learning results. English is an essential factor for university graduates to seek jobs. However, there are still problems in teaching English in higher education institutions. Firstly, there is not unification in curricula, textbooks. Secondly, there is not item bank assured in quality to be used for English examinations. In this situation, the VNU’s Center for Education Quality Assurance and Research development was tasked to develop an item bank of English subject for students of non-English specialization.

The research consists of three parts: Part I presents the rationales of setting up an item bank of English subject. Part II introduces theoretical basis and principles for creating an item bank. Part III describes software for management and automatically combination of items for examinations.

7. Applying mathematical models to study relations between cognitive ability and indicators of training quality assurance at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (2004 - 2005)

Researcher: MA. Bui Kien Trung

The content of the research is as follows: Determining indicators of measurement of students’ cognitive ability; determining indicators of training quality assurance that influence development of students’ cognitive ability; measuring indicators showing students’ cognitive ability; applying mathematical models to analyze relations between cognitive ability and indicators of training quality assurance; measures of improving training quality in higher education institutions based on the view point of development of students’ cognitive ability.

8. Studying the ways of making exam items and organizing higher education entrance examinations since 1990 up to now in Vietnam (2002-2003)

Researcher: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Duc Ngoc

The research studied the weaknesses in the ways of organizing entrance examinations and making exam items in Vietnam since 1990, annual measures of improving and “three common things” measure used in 2002, 2003 as well as “four common things” applied in 2004. The last measure fully represented solution offered by the VNU’s Center for Education Quality Assurance & Research Development in 2001. On the basis of analyzing strengths and weaknesses of used measures, the Center continued to offer solution of improving higher education entrance examinations based on science of measurement and evaluation that has been approved to be a Master’s training program at CEQARD since 2005.

9. Studying model of evaluation of training effectiveness by students for each subject at Vietnam National University,Hanoi (2002-2003)

Researcher: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phuong Nga

The research demonstrated the effectiveness of evaluation of training effectiveness by students. Its results not only help teachers themselves to adjust their subjects, but also help managers to review content and curricula for training of institutions. The research set up a standard procedure of evaluation and an appropriate method for model of evaluating training effectiveness by students. The research also offered a standard toolkit of measurement that had been applied in a pilot scope on 200 VNU’s students. The toolkit reaches standardization and has high level reliability. The exam items have been standardized by the latest and most modern method are feasible in measurement.
